The Indian in the Cupboard

June 23rd, 2008

The Indian in the Cupboard Young Hal Scardino stars as a sensitive boy who discovers a way to bring plastic toys to life in a locked cupboard. One of those toys, a 19th-century Iroquois warrior (played by actor Litefoot), was actually a real warrior now only several inches tall. A bond eventually develops between boy and warrior, and a six-shooting toy cowboy (David Keith). As with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Indian in the Cupboard (which was written by E.T. scribe Melissa Mathison) is about a magical visitor connecting with a lonely child. But director Frank Oz (In & Out) has made the film far too stiff and dramatically flat to get across the enchantment necessary to make the fantasy work. Watching this is like listening to someone who can’t tell a good story to save his life, yet who is trying to captivate your attention and heart. –Tom Keogh
Customer Review: Sweet timeless movie
My daughter’s third grade class was reading this book and so she asked to have the movie too. I’m so glad we agreed. It is a really sweet story that holds up to today’s discussions about diversity. It’s about friendship and fairness and loyalty and a dozen other ideas as well. Just a really nice all-around feel good family movie.

Secret games 3 Customer Review: Secret games 3
This so-called unrated version should be rated PG. I have the version taped from cinemax, and it is much better. I bought this DVD thinking it was that version. Boy, was I wrong. If you want hot & steamy, don’t buy this one. It’s not even luke warm.

CH Products Flight Sim Yoke USB ( 200-615 )

June 22nd, 2008

CH Products Flight Sim Yoke USB ( 200-615 ) Command the skies with the king of flight simulator controls, the Flight Sim Yoke USB. This one of a kind yoke offers features that will allow you to fly with the realism you’ve come to expect from CH Products. The Flight Sim Yoke USB provides 5 axes of control including, pitch, roll, throttle lever, propeller lever, and mixture lever. It also features 20 button functions, including 2-way gear switch, 2-way flaps switch, 8-way hat switch, two 2-way rocker switches, and 4 push buttons. Pilots around the world applaud the comfortably placed prop, throttle and mixture levers. It’s the closest thing you’ll get to sitting in your own cockpit.
Customer Review: CH Flight Sim
This flight-yoke is somewhat realistic, but, because it’s spring-loaded (not, weight-loaded by pressure on the control-surface), it is not possible to “feel” the airplane off or onto the runway, nor through turns, or climbs… the feel is (always) heavy. I am a pilot… not a gamer; I know what a real yoke feels-like to fly. This is a “toy“, at best.

Toys in the Attic

June 20th, 2008

toys in the Attic Originally released in 1975, this was Aerosmith’s breakout recording. Listeners only familiar with their more recent, post-comeback material may be surprised; like their other albums from the 1970s, toys has a strong blues inflection, as indicated by their cover of “Big Ten Inch Record,” which also shows that Aerosmith has never lacked raunchiness or innuendo. There’s also the original (pre-Run-D.M.C.) version of “Walk This Way,” and the classic “Sweet Emotion.” This is classic Aerosmith at its gritty, streetwise best; they may have been derivative, but it really doesn’t matter, then or now: it’s all in good fun. –Genevieve Williams
Customer Review: Great Rock n Roll
Withstands the passage of time. Brings back memories of College days. Much simpler times….

Just great meaty rock and roll.

Wii Nunchuck data logger
One of our readers sent in the really interesting data logger. It uses an Arduino to capture the Nunchuck’s accelerometer data and stores it to the eeprom. I used a Microchip 25AA512 eeprom. It holds 64000 bytes. Normally the accelerometer data for each axis is in a range of about 1 to 1000. I scaled that down to 1 to 255, so that I could fit one accelerometer reading to a byte. By doing that, the eeprom can hold over 21,000 nunchuck readings. The Departed (Widescreen Edition) Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with The Departed, hailed by many as Scorsese’s best film since Casino. Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese’s intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, The Departed is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there’s no denying that The Departed is a signature piece of work from one of America’s finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It’s an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who’s been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello’s crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by Kingdom of Heaven screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they’re essentially looking for “themselves”) while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.

Such convenient coincidences might sink a lesser film, but The Departed is so electrifying that you barely notice the plot-holes. And while Nicholson’s profane swagger is too much “Jack” and not enough “Costello,” he’s still a joy to watch, especially in a film that’s additionally energized by memorable (and frequently hilarious) supporting roles for Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and a host of other big-name performers. The Departed also makes clever and plot-dependent use of cell-phones, to the extent that it couldn’t exist without them. Powered by Scorsese’s trademark use of well-chosen soundtrack songs (from vintage rock to Puccini’s operas), The Departed may not be perfect, but it’s one helluva ride for moviegoers, proving popular enough to become the biggest box-office hit of Scorsese’s commercially rocky career. –Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Thank You Mr Scorsese
This is just an amazing movie. For absolute Scorsese fans, it’s an unforgettable experience beyond all superlatives: superbly written, brilliantly directed, wonderfully acted, cleverly edited. Beautiful music, powerful dialogs, sex, drug and blood, we’re so close to perfection. What craftmanship!

Customer Review: These cost $10.00 with shipping!

Park-Zone 110-Volt Dual-Powered Battery-Powered Precision Parking Device #PZ-1500 Park-Zone is an innovative precision-parking device for the home that’s easy to use and even easier to install. After a simple one-time setup, the Park-Zone uses its ultrasonic sensing mechanism to measure the distance from your car to the garage wall as you park. When you pull into the garage, you see the green light illuminate, then midway it changes to yellow, and when the light turns red you’re right where you want to be. In our book, this beats a tennis ball hanging on a string because it’s a lot easier to set up, it’s much more precise, and, unlike the tennis ball, it looks good in a garage. Anyone who parks in a small or crowded garage will appreciate the accuracy this gadget offers. The Park-Zone operates on AC power or on batteries that last an entire year. Stop bumping the back wall and get into the Park-Zone. –Brian Trinen
Customer Review: I don’t hit the wall anymore.
Easy to install. My 4 door pick up is a tight fit for my garage (I have a 2′ allowance). Before I installing this device I would occasionally bump the wall or have to pull up a bit further. Not any more — Perfect every time!!!
